James says Here is a list of banks that offer high-yield CD options: Blackstone shareholders should expect to enjoy a fairly high yield going forward, but they must be prepared for extreme variations in the dividend, including some quarters where the dividend is cut in half and others where it doubles.
2015-10-15 The company is still able to implement low to mid-single-digit dividend increases for now, including a 6.5% boost announced in April 2018, and cash flow from operations and asset sales now exceeds the company’s dividend, providing some more breathing room. Access Checking ; 5% / 3% / 2% / 1% SmartyPig was just recently bought by Sallie Mae. I used to really like the idea of the old service, especially cashing in part of your savings on discounted gift cards. Now it’s a pain to use. Sallie requires paperwork for most changes to your account. To change an address, we have to scan documentation and upload or mail it in to them. They definitely made the service one of the most difficult to use. I would close out accounts if I could figure out how (another difficulty). Just thought others would want a heads up before using them or socking away much savings there.

Recent subscriber. As will all newsletters, I paper trade all recommendations that pass successfully through a screen. Most email sites have good screener software as will one’s online broker: Scotrade, OptionsXpress and Schwab. After 3 months I reject those recommendation that are not performing on par with the S&P500 or better. So far High-Yield paper trading has produced 8.5% gains not including dividends. That is since July. I compare this gain with other emails I receive tauting their dividend stock recommedations. Guess what, High-Yield is ahead. I repeat, I paper trade only those recommendations that pass a screener test. As… Read more »

Walter Updegrave, writing for CNNMoney, recommends that you evaluate your risk tolerance before investing any of your emergency savings in any bond fund – even a short-term one.
The Roth IRA is different. Since you fund your Roth with after-tax income, you are free to withdraw any contributions (not earnings on those contributions) at any time you want. Buy Investment Properties in Appreciating Areas: The houses are nicer and the areas are appreciating, but this is very risky because you’re depending on continued appreciation. Here you’re coupling appreciation and a decent rental income with the leverage you get by not paying all cash. Buy a $150,000 property with 25% down. Your investment is $37,500. You’ve gained 4-to-1 leverage by putting 25% down, so a rise in value of 8% represents a return on investment of 32%. Plus, there are some areas of the country where you could see a positive cash flow—certain areas of the Midwest (Indianapolis, perhaps), the South (near Atlanta and Memphis), and other places, such as some cities in Texas. (Note: There are some scam artists in this niche, so be especially careful to do your due diligence.)
Mitre Media Emerging market bond funds: These funds invest in debt issued by governments and corporations of emerging economies such as the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, and China). Yields are currently more than twice the payout on the 10-year U.S. Treasury; as a result, investors rushed into these funds this year. A small slug of emerging markets bonds offers a compelling way to add currency and global diversification, but just don’t mistake it for a core holding. “These can be as volatile or more volatile than stocks,” points out Schwab’s Williams. If your current bond fund mix doesn’t already give you exposure to emerging markets, check out PIMCO Emerging Markets Bond (PEMDX; 5.1 percent yield).
