Generally, if investments make more money than they cost, they can be considered good investments. Most successful investors are what can be called hedged risk-takers. That means that they will take risks periodically if they can afford to, but they never take more risks than are considered necessary to accomplish their goals. Although there are investments that historically have reaped more financial rewards than financial disasters, many more are nothing more than bottomless pits that continually feed the never-quenched thirst of speculation. They seem to always promise great returns but seldom seem to deliver.

It tracks fixed-rate, renminbi (“RMB”)-denominated bonds issued in the People's Republic of China by Chinese credit, governmental and quasi-governmental issuers. While the fee of 0.50 percent is decent for such exotic exposure, Balchunas notes that the ETF is very small, at $4.8 million. Those wanting to buy the ETF should use a limit order to specify the price they are willing to pay.

Of course, it's easy enough to find investments that don't have that loss potential. If you stick to cash equivalents like FDIC-insured CDs and money-market accounts or short-term Treasury bills, you don't have to worry about losing principal or seeing the value of your savings drop when the financial markets are in turmoil. But you're not going to reap big gains, either. Over the past eight and a half years, for example, Treasury money market funds and 3-month Treasury bills returned only an annualized 0.2% or so.

These plans are also referred to as defined contribution plans. How do you miss out of SIPC coverage by putting it in a Roth? By the way when you say FDIC – SIPC it makes it sound like it’s a function of, or a subsidiary of, the FDIC, which I don’t think it is. Why would you invest in a Roth short term (unless it’s for one of the few exemptions like a first time home buyer) when you’re going to get slapped with taxes and penalties (you’d likely end up with less than if you just put it in a regular brokerage account, assuming short term is a year or two)? By the way people some credit unions offer a fairly high yield, with no risk (FDIC insured), on a portion of the balance. Not a huge amount but if you had an account at several of these places it’d be a good place to park several grand.
