Spread duration is displayed in years and reflects the contribution by sector to the portfolio's total spread duration with the exception of the Treasury and Interest-rate swap sectors where effective duration is displayed. Spread duration estimates the price sensitivity of a specific sector or asset class to a 100 basis-point movement, 1%, (either widening or narrowing) in its yield spread relative to Treasuries. Effective duration provides a measure of a portfolio's interest-rate sensitivity. The longer a portfolio's duration, the more sensitive the portfolio is to shifts in the interest rates. Allocations may not total 100% of net assets because the table includes the notional value of derivatives (the economic value for purposes of calculating periodic payment obligations), in addition to the market value of securities.

High-yield savings accounts, CDs, money markets funds, and short-duration bonds all have the potential to help you generate more income from your cash. But what about higher-yielding options? Longer-dated bonds, high yield bonds, preferred and convertible securities, or even dividend-paying stocks all may offer higher yields than these options. But beware of chasing yield—the risks of these higher yielding options is such that they should not be considered as a way to improve the yield on your cash.

Think of a REIT like a mutual fund that owns real estate. When looking for an online checking account that actually lets you earn interest, look for a bank with excellent customer service, a user-friendly online interface, and competitive interest rates. If you want utmost flexibility, it’s also important to seek out an account that doesn’t impose account minimums or deposit requirements. Industrial Goods Floating rate funds: These are portfolios of short-term loans banks make to corporations in need of cash. A current yield of 3 percent to 4 percent on average comes with a unique selling point in today’s uber-low interest rate environment: Unlike most fixed income plays, the payout of floating rate debt goes up when rates rise. Much like an adjustable rate mortgage, the interest rate on these short-term bank loans to corporations is pegged to a benchmark rate such as LIBOR or the Prime Rate; when those rates rise, so too does the interest rate on the floating rate fund. Another benefit is that the debt is “senior secured,” meaning that in the event the borrowing firm gets into financial trouble, this debt is way up on the food chain in getting paid back. That said, floating rate funds are most definitely not a cash equivalent. Most floating-rate borrowers are companies with lower credit quality, so when the economy’s in trouble, they can get smacked. In 2008, for example, the average bank loan fund lost 30 percent, according to Morningstar, though they’ve just about recovered their losses since then. Fidelity Floating High Rate Income (FFRHX, 3.2 percent yield) held on far better than most, losing 17 percent in 2008; over the past five years its annualized return is 4 percent.
That's not enough of a track record to prove to me that Apple is committed to paying dividends every quarter for years to come. I know this might not be the most appropriate place to post this but for other readers living in the USA are you concerned about the debt? It just seems like it is getting to the point where the country is going to go bankrupt and my husband and I are just a little concerned that our kids and grandkids are going to have some big problems in a few years. Thanks for letting me vent, Sara
Bear in mind, though, that if you withdraw your money early from a CD, you'll probably have to pay a penalty equal to several months of interest. As with cash for your living expenses, you may generally want to choose CDs that are FDIC insured.

Ask New Question Mahtab Naqvi says Treasury Notes. These medium-term securities range from 2 years to 10 years in length. Their price can be greater than, less than, or equal to their face value, depending on demand, and they pay interest every six months until they mature. You can sell a Treasury note before it reaches maturity, but you can’t always get full value for it. If interest rates have risen since the time you bought it, investors have little reason to buy your note, since newly issued notes pay more. In early 2016, the interest rates for 5-year Treasury notes fell between 1% and 1.5% – better than you could do with a 5-year CD.

Galleries▶ Check and Debit Card Use. A rewards checking account, just like any other checking account, lets you write as many checks per month as you like. However, you shouldn’t plan to make all your transactions by check. According to Bankrate, 93% of all rewards checking accounts require you to make a certain number of debit card transactions each month to earn the maximum interest rate. Some banks require these transactions to be the kind where you swipe your card and sign a physical receipt, rather than typing in a PIN.

Investors focused on U.S. telecoms’ deal-making might have missed the industry’s lush dividend yields. Verizon completed the acquisition of Yahoo!’s core internet business earlier this year, while AT&T is seeking to merge with Time Warner (TWX) in a deal that has come under regulatory fire. Verizon shares are down 1% this year, and AT&T has fallen 11%. Barron’s made a bullish case for Verizon last month, arguing that the long price war in the wireless market “is easing, not worsening.”
